Report scope 1 GHG emissions

Calculate scope 1 emissions from fuel use, distance travelled and money spent on fuel in your organisation, using Ducky's API

Scope 1 emissionsare direct emissions from company-owned and controlled resources.  They are divided into four categories:

  • Stationary combustion: These emissions result from the combustion of fuels in stationary sources (boilers, furnaces, turbines) to produce electricity and generate steam or heat.
  • Mobile combustion: These emissions result from the combustion of fuels in company owned/controlled mobile combustion sources (e.g., trucks, trains, ships, aeroplanes, buses, and cars)
  • Fugitive emissions : These emissions result from intentional or unintentional releases, e.g., equipment leaks from joints, seals, packing, and gaskets; methane emissions from coal mines and venting; hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) emissions during the use of refrigeration and air conditioning equipment; and methane leakages from gas transport.
  • Process emissions: released during industrial processes, on-site manufacturing

To summarise, the emissions from all the fuels used by the organisation are reported under Scope 1.

How to calculate scope 1 emissions with Ducky's API

Ducky currently does not have a separate endpoint dedicated to scope 1 accounting. Several existing endpoints can be used to calculate scope 1 emissions, depending on the activity data you have available. The table below shows which endpoint to use for each type of activity data, in order of preference (the more precise the activity data, the more accurate the result):

Activity data Covered by Relevant categories
Fuel used, in litres or kWh (stationary combustion) Convert Energy oil, gas, wood
Distance travelled, in km (mobile combustion) Convert Transport e.g. fossilCar, hybridCar, dieselBusShort, fossilMotorBoat
Money spent on fuel Convert Finance fuelsForTransport, energy, energySolidFuels
Fugitive emissions Not covered by current endpoints
Process emissions Not covered by current endpoints

Currently, you are responsible for correctly allocating company activities to scope 1.

Note that the Convert endpoints return the full life cycle footprint (including e.g. production of vehicles and infrastructure, and well-to-tank emissions), which is intended for consumer communication and goes beyond what the GHG Protocol requires to be reported. Results may therefore be higher than emissions calculated with the factors prescribed for GHG reporting.

See the linked articles for details on the inputs, outputs, calculations and sources of each endpoint.
